Learning from our emotions (and our pets)
I’ve always had a connection with pets. When I was born, my family had a German Shepherd named Heidi. I used to take naps with my head on her belly, and my mom would say she would stay there, still, until I woke up!
At age 28, having lived my previous fifteen years without a pet, I brought home a Siberian Husky puppy and named him Sergei.
The next 12 years brought many trials and challenges, but they also ended up being the most healing and catalystic of my life, allowing me to become who I am today.
Sergei was there through it all. And, in reflection, I could see his lessons for me during each and every one of those moments. Pets truly are our greatest teachers and healers, as well as companions, throughout life!
My book, Sergei’s Eyes, Reflections of Soul Lessons recounts several of my memories with Sergei. Quick viniettes of my seemingly ordinary life moments are transformed into insightful soul lessons to reflect on through his eyes.
Ending with the story of legacy he inspired for The Sergei Foundation, a non-profit organization I founded in 2009, Sergei lives on by helping thousands of lower-income families save the lives of their companion dog (or cat!).
I hope my courage to share personal experiences are relatable, uniting us in compassion by showing you are not alone in your life’s journey. And, to change how you connect with your own pets, seeing them as your own guides and greastest teachers.
